6 Music is a community that celebrates the alternative spirit in music, the discernible thread in music originating from the late 60s, when pop music became more radical and challenging.
The limitations of the existing 6 Music brand were restricting the ability to develop designs that reflect 6 Music show personalities. I needed a visual design system which complemented the existing 6 Music brand assets but conveyed the breadth and depth of the music played on 6 Music, the individual flavours of the shows and supported the overarching brand values of 6 Music which are passion, discovery and rediscovery.
Firedog, who were successful in the four-way pitch, developed a pastiche concept which stemmed from the Beatles Revolver album cover artwork. We wrote questionnaires for all of the presenters and production teams behind the shows, to capture a distinct design brief for each. Then designed the collages to reflect the tone and personality of the presenter, show and music played, using objects to communicate literally or metaphorically.
